How to ask for more time to pay a bill (with a template)
If you can’t pay a bill on time, the worst thing is usually to say nothing. Asking early gives you the most options.
Ask before the due date
Companies are usually more flexible before a payment is missed than after. Contact them as soon as you know you’ll have trouble paying.

Know what you can afford
Before you call, write down your income and your essential costs: rent, food, utilities, transport. That tells you what you can realistically pay and when. Only agree to a plan you can keep.
What to ask for
- A short extension: paying the full amount a couple of weeks late without a late fee.
- A payment plan: splitting the amount into smaller payments over several months.
- Hardship help: many utility, phone and lending companies have hardship programs for people going through job loss, illness or other difficulties.
- Fees waived: ask whether late fees can be removed if you keep to the new plan.
A template you can use
Get it in writing
If you agree a plan by phone, ask for written confirmation by email or letter, including the amounts and dates. Keep it until the bill is fully paid.
If you are struggling with several bills
Free, non-profit debt and money advice services exist in many countries. They can help you decide which bills to prioritize and talk to companies for you.
Tip: Put the new payment dates in your calendar straight away, so you never miss one of the agreed payments.
Check your own document
Snap or paste your bill or letter and get it explained in plain words, with red flags and next steps.
